Who are e-shoppers in the Czechia and what do they want from an online store

The e-commerce market in the Czechia has an interesting particularity: the age categories to which most Czech e-shoppers belong are extreme: over 50 years old (29%), respectively between 18 and 29 years old (28%).

Czech e-commerce market dominated by female customers

The majority of Czech e-shoppers are women (57%, EU 56%), the average age being 40.2 years (EU 42.4 years). It is interesting that most Czech e-shoppers fall into the age categories of over 50 years (29%), respectively 18-29 years (28%).

Why do Czechs shop online

The main reasons why Czechs shop online are that it saves time (72%, EU 77%) and that it saves them the stress of shopping in stores (61%, EU 66%).

For 57% of Czech e-shoppers (EU 63%), online shopping helps save money. In fact, for 66% of them (EU 61%), up by 7 percent compared to the previous year, the most important factor in the purchase decision is the price. At the same time, 69% of Czech e-shoppers (EU 69%) admit that they are always looking for "really good" offers.

What Czech e-shoppers buy

In the top of the products preferred by Czech e-shoppers are those from the Fashion category (50%, EU 59%), Beauty/Health Care (50%, EU 48%), Footwear (47%, EU 49%), Medicines (45 %, EU 24%) and Leisure products (45%, EU 37%).

Books (38%, EU 43%) and Fresh Food & Drinks (36%, EU 35%) are also some of the product categories preferred by Czech e-shoppers.

Followed by Toys (32%, EU 29%), Decorations and Small Furniture (31%, EU 31%) and Electronics (26%, EU 29%).

Social Media

85% (EU 70%) of Czech e-shoppers use social media for at least one shopping-related purpose: to find inspiration (34%, EU 28%), to see recommendations from friends and family (34%, EU 21%) or for product information (32%, EU 25%).

More than half of Czech e-shoppers (57%, EU 48%) say they bought directly from social media platforms.

Shopping from abroad

62% of Czech e-shoppers shop online from abroad (EU 57%) when they find better deals (57%, EU 52%) or because they cannot find the respective products or brands in the Czech Republic (47%, EU 52%) . For 15% of them (EU 13%) it is important that the website is written in Czech.

They most frequently buy from online stores in China (63%, EU 51%), Germany (33%, EU 29%) and Slovakia (23%, EU 2%). In total, 71% (EU 75%) say they usually make purchases from European online stores.

DPD Czechia: 42 million parcels delivered in 2022
