The courier and logistics company DPD is investing 120,000 euros in the automation of special handling goods at the Jüri sorting centre.
In June, DPD will install a new special handling parcel measurement and weighing solution at its Jüri sorting centre, which will help automate the necessary processes and increase the efficiency of parcel handling.
According to Remo Kirss, CEO of DPD, in addition to small packages delivered through a network of parcel lockers, people also need home delivery for large-scale goods. In April of last year, DPD started a nationwide home delivery service for goods that require special handling. “The service has received very good feedback, and in support of this business line, we are investing in a solution for measuring, weighing, sorting and automating large-scale goods,” Kirss added.
“Special handling packages are consignments of different shapes, such as larger consignments or packages containing more delicate items. Handling them, i.e., weighing, measuring, and sorting, is more complicated than usual and we have done it manually so far,” explained Remo Kirss. “Last year, we mapped the concerns about handling special handling packages to find more efficient solutions, i.e., automate as many processes as possible.”
Depending on the nature of the goods, handling special packages may be more time consuming and resource intensive. The new automation solution consists of a sorting line, a weight and a laser scanner, the automated work of which allows you to determine the weight and dimensions of larger, special-shaped and even delicate objects efficiently and accurately. With the introduction of the solution, the old manual solution will be replaced in the special handling area of the Jüri sorting centre.
“This will allow us to handle special handling packages much more efficiently and quickly and reduce the time spent on follow-up activities,” Kirss added. According to him, the sorting efficiency of special handling packages with the new solution will increase by about 40%. “Processing is not only faster for us, with the new technology the delivery of goods becomes faster for the customer as well,” Kirss confirmed.
The amount of the investment is 120,000 euros.
