DPD Estonia is launching robotic sorting as the first logistics company in the Baltics. The robots will increase efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility, helping the company handle peak parcel volumes more effectively.
According to DPD Estonia’s CEO, Remo Kirss, this is future technology that is both cost-efficient and offers a faster return on investment compared to traditional solutions. "The biggest advantage of the robotic solution is the significant improvement in parcel throughput capacity. This allows us to handle larger volumes and provide even faster and more accurate service compared to our existing sorting processes," Kirss explains.
The sorting process automation will occur in two stages. "First, we will implement the robotic sorting solution, focusing on shipments destined for parcel lockers. In the second phase, later this spring, we will upgrade our existing sorting line to enhance sorting capacity further," Kirss elaborates.
Adaptable for peak seasons
A key challenge in the logistics sector is fluctuations in parcel volumes, such as the over 20% increase during the Christmas season. The robotic sorting solution can be quickly adapted to handle even the highest volume periods. "The solution is flexible and adaptable to regional volume changes while minimizing the need for additional workforce," he highlights.
DPD Estonia's robotic solution is a high-tech system that is entirely new and different from previously used methods. While such technology is still relatively new, it offers a significantly shorter payback period compared to traditional solutions.
Changing employee roles
Kirss estimates that sorting efficiency will triple with the robots, taking the speed and accuracy of the process to a new level. "With the robotic solution, we can manage fluctuating volumes without hiring additional seasonal workers. This ensures service stability throughout the year," the DPD Estonia CEO notes.
The introduction of robots does not mean a reduction in workforce but rather a shift in their responsibilities. "Employees will focus more on technical tasks, such as monitoring the robots and managing the sorting process. Reduced human intervention in sorting minimizes the risk of errors and increases overall workflow efficiency," Kirss explains.
Automation also brings cost savings, as the robotic solution enhances work efficiency and service capacity without unexpected labor costs.
