New microdepot: DPD delivers by cargo bike in Dresden

Aschaffenburg, September 22nd, 2023: DPD Germany is now delivering parcels in Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, emission-free by cargo bike. The international parcel and express service provider is using the provider-neutral micro depot at Dresden-Neustadt station provided by Smart City | DB and the state capital Dresden for this purpose.

DPD uses the microdepot as a drop-off and transshipment point. From there, the parcel service provider can handle and deliver shipments for the "last mile", i.e. the final transport route to the recipient's front door. For this purpose, DPD is initially using two Cargobikes from the Berlin-based manufacturer ONOMOTION. This will enable the company to deliver up to 80 parcels per cargo bike every day. If necessary, the volume can be increased by reloading at the micro depot. An expansion of the fleet is also possible in the future.

The cargo bikes we use enable us to distribute our customers' parcels quickly and efficiently in the surrounding districts. This has a positive impact on the quality of life in residential areas, as inner-city traffic is relieved and air quality is thus improved. With Smart City | DB as our partner, we have already successfully implemented numerous projects in the past. We are delighted that we are now embarking on a new chapter of cooperation with the state capital Dresden.

Stephan Kühn, Mayor of Transport for the state capital Dresden, emphasizes: "The traffic of the future must be compatible with the city and climate-friendly. There is great potential in delivery traffic. With cargo bikes and electric vehicles, we can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The small vehicles also relieve road congestion and increase traffic safety."
