The sustained growth of online commerce has led to a significant increase in parcel volumes. In order to be able to manage these operations in the long term, DPD is increasingly investing in the construction of further parcel sorting centres. At a cost of around 120 million euros, new DPD depots are currently being built in Melsdorf near Kiel, Hamm and Augsburg. At these important hubs in the north, west and south of Germany, the international parcel and express service provider is gradually increasing the daily volume of parcels handled at these three locations to over 330,000 parcels per day. In the medium term, up to 1,500 workers will be working for DPD at the three depots.

New DPD Depot in Melsdorf to come on stream in the summer of 2019

The new parcel sorting centre in Melsdorf near Kiel is scheduled to go into operation as early as summer 2019. After an initial start-up phase, around 40,000 parcels per day will soon be handled here and up to 160 delivery vehicles per day will be making deliveries. The new depot in the north of Germany will replace the DPD location in Schleswig and also relieve the neighbouring locations in Osterrönfeld, Lübcek and Norderstedt. Up to 300 employees will offer customers and recipients of the region an even better service at the new location in Rotenhof inter-municipal industrial park.

More than 350 workers to be deployed in Hamm from autumn 2019 onwards

One of DPD's largest parcel sorting centres in Germany is being built in Hamm, Westphalia. The company is investing around 50 million euros in the new 122,000 square metre building in the inter-municipal InlogParc of the municipalities of Hamm and Bönen. From autumn 2019, more than 350 people will be employed here, and this figure will rise to more than 800 in the final phase. The daily volume of parcels handled will be gradually increased from 80,000 parcels at the beginning to over 200,000 per day. The heart of the new depot in Hamm will be the high-performance sorting system, which will be able to process up to 30,000 parcels per hour fully automatically in the final configuration.

From 2020 up to 93,000 parcels will be handled daily in Augsburg

The new parcel sorting centre in Augsburg will replace the previous DPD location from the beginning of 2020. In addition, with its newly created capacities the 45 million euro new building will relieve the parcel sorting centres of Neufahrn in the east and Nuremberg in the north. The 53,500 square metre facility will initially handle around 36,000 parcels a day, and later up to 93,000. At the final stage 380 DPD employees will work at the Augsburg depot, including 200 delivery personnel.
